I can remember shortly after Internet Explorer 5 was released, in the
access logs for my web site appeared lots of error's about
a mysterious favicon.ico file which could not be found.
It was some time after that I found out that if you bookmark a site
within Internet Explorer 5 or above, the browser will try and
retrieve a favicon.ico file from the site, and if it's a
valid icon file of size 16x16 with 16 colors (or colours) then
the icon will be placed along side the site title in the bookmarks menu.
